Why It’s So Hard to Find English Yoga in Tokyo (And Where to Go Instead)

When people first move to Tokyo, they feel excited and to dive into the city’s wellness scene, only to quickly reaIize that they can’t find a yoga class that they can actually follow. Most studios are taught entirely in Japanese, and even if they do have bilingual classes, the classes are limited and most people end up becoming more stressed than relaxed, struggling to understand the teacher while trying not to fall out of Warrior II.

If you’re new to Tokyo, or just prefer practicing in English, you’re not alone. Here’s why it can be challenging—and where to go for a better experience.

1. The Language Barrier Is Real
Yoga relies heavily on verbal cues—subtle shifts in posture, breath awareness, transitions. In Japanese-only classes, it’s easy to miss details or feel unsure about what’s happening.
Even if you’ve practiced for years, not understanding the language can leave you feeling disconnected from your own practice.

2. Comfort + Confidence = A Better Practice
Yoga isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, mental, and deeply personal. Being able to understand and connect with your teacher helps you drop into the moment, relax fully, and move with confidence.
When the instructions are in a language you’re fluent in, your body responds more naturally.

3. Finding Community as a Foreigner
Practicing yoga in English also opens the door to connection. At our studio, you’re likely to meet fellow expats, travelers, and globally-minded locals. People who get what it’s like to live between cultures, or start fresh in a new city.
That sense of community can be just as healing as the practice itself.
